Online Scams in India: Types, Prevention, and Reporting

India processes over 10 billion UPI transactions per month. With 300+ million digital payment users, the country's digital infrastructure is among the most advanced in the world. But that same infrastructure has created an enormous attack surface for scammers. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre recorded over ₹10,000 crore in reported cybercrime losses in 2025 — and the actual figure is estimated to be 4-5x higher due to underreporting.

UPI Fraud: India's Biggest Digital Scam

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) has transformed Indian payments, but scammers exploit its convenience relentlessly:

The "collect request" scam: Instead of sending you money, the scammer sends a UPI collect request (pull payment). The notification looks similar to a payment received notification. If you approve it, money leaves your account instead of arriving. This catches even tech-savvy users who don't read the notification carefully.

"Sir, I am sending the payment for your OLX item. Please approve the UPI request to receive ₹25,000." — The "request" is actually a collect request that debits your account.

The QR code trick: The scammer says they'll send payment via QR code. But scanning a QR code for UPI payment means you're sending money, not receiving it. No one needs to send you a QR code to pay you — they need your UPI ID.

Fake UPI apps: Counterfeit apps that mimic Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm interfaces, showing fake payment confirmation screens. Scammers show these fake confirmations to sellers as "proof" of payment.

KYC Scam

You receive an SMS or call claiming your bank account, Paytm, or PhonePe KYC is expiring and your account will be blocked. You're asked to download a screen-sharing app (AnyDesk or TeamViewer) to complete the "KYC update remotely." Once you install it and share the access code, the scammer has full control of your phone and can access your banking apps.

Banks never ask you to install screen-sharing apps. KYC updates happen at bank branches or through official app interfaces — never via third-party remote access.

Fake Customer Care Numbers

This is uniquely prevalent in India. When people Google customer care numbers for banks, apps, or companies, scam results often appear above legitimate ones. Some scammers even run Google Ads for "SBI customer care" or "PhonePe helpline" that lead to their own numbers.

When you call these fake numbers, the "customer service agent" asks for your card details, OTP, or remote access to "solve" your issue. Always get customer care numbers from the official app or website — never from Google search results.

The "Digital Arrest" Scam

A growing scam in 2025-2026 where victims receive video calls from people impersonating police, CBI, or customs officials. They claim your Aadhaar has been linked to money laundering, drug smuggling, or other serious crimes. They conduct a fake "digital interrogation" via video call, keeping the victim on camera for hours — sometimes days — while demanding money to "settle" the case.

No law enforcement agency in India conducts arrests or interrogations via video call. This scam has targeted professionals, retirees, and even IIT graduates, with individual losses ranging from ₹5 lakh to ₹3 crore.

Loan App Fraud

Predatory loan apps — many operating from outside India — offer instant small loans with hidden exorbitant interest rates. When borrowers can't repay, the apps access their phone contacts and photos, then threaten to share morphed explicit images with contacts unless additional payments are made. This has led to multiple suicides across India.

Only borrow from RBI-licensed NBFCs. Check the RBI's list of registered lenders before using any loan app.

Matrimonial and Romance Scams

Fake profiles on Shaadi.com, BharatMatrimony, and other platforms target people seeking arranged marriages. The scammer builds a relationship, then invents emergencies — medical bills, visa fees, business losses — that require money. NRI profiles claiming to be based in the US, UK, or Canada are particularly common fronts.

Online Shopping Scams

Fake e-commerce sites mimicking Flipkart, Amazon, or Meesho offer products at impossible discounts. Payment is collected, but products never arrive — or cheap counterfeits are shipped. Instagram-based businesses are particularly prone to this.

How to Protect Yourself

Never approve a UPI collect request you didn't initiate. Receiving money through UPI never requires you to approve anything or enter your PIN. If someone asks you to enter your PIN to "receive" money, it's a scam.

Never install screen-sharing apps at someone's request. AnyDesk, TeamViewer, and similar apps should never be installed because someone on a call told you to.

Verify customer care numbers from official sources only. Open the official app of the bank or service and find the helpline number there.

Check suspicious messages with IsThisAScam. Paste any SMS, WhatsApp message, or email you're uncertain about for instant analysis of scam patterns and red flags.

Report immediately to 1930. India's cybercrime helpline (1930) can freeze fraudulent accounts if you report within the "golden hour." The faster you report, the higher the chance of recovery.

Where to Report in India

  • National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930 (call immediately for financial fraud)
  • Cyber Crime Portal: cybercrime.gov.in
  • RBI Sachet: sachet.rbi.org.in (for banking fraud)
  • Your bank's fraud helpline
  • Local police cyber cell

Time is critical in UPI fraud. The 1930 helpline can freeze funds in transit if you call within minutes of the scam. Don't waste time — call immediately, then file the online complaint.
