Every month, we compile the most significant scam developments from our analysis of user reports, law enforcement alerts, and threat intelligence feeds. April 2026 brings a concerning escalation in AI-assisted social engineering, a new wave of tax-season scams extending past the filing deadline, and the continued evolution of cryptocurrency fraud targeting retail investors.

Encountered any of these scams? Report and verify at IsThisAScam.to — every report helps protect others.

Trend 1: Post-Tax Season IRS Scams

While IRS scams peak during filing season (January-April), April 2026 shows a new pattern: scammers targeting people after they have filed, claiming issues with their returns. Common variants this month:

  • "Your refund has been flagged" — texts and emails claiming the IRS detected discrepancies and your refund is on hold until you verify your identity through a provided link. The IRS communicates refund issues by mail, never by text or email with links.
  • "Additional tax owed" — calls from spoofed IRS numbers claiming you underpaid and must settle immediately to avoid penalties. The real IRS sends CP14 notices by mail for unpaid taxes.
  • "Free amendment filing" — emails offering free tax return amendments through a "new IRS portal." The link harvests Social Security numbers and financial data.

We processed over 12,000 IRS-related scam reports in the first two weeks of April — a 40% increase over the same period in 2025.

Trend 2: AI Voice Clone "Emergency" Calls

The most alarming trend of 2026 continues to accelerate. In April, we documented a 67% increase in reported AI voice clone scams compared to January. The typical scenario: a victim receives a call that sounds exactly like their child, spouse, or parent in distress — kidnapped, arrested, or in an accident. The caller (actually a scammer using cloned audio) urgently requests wire transfer, Zelle, or cryptocurrency payment.

New developments this month:

  • Scammers are combining voice clones with spoofed caller ID showing the impersonated person's actual phone number
  • Some calls include background noise (crying, sirens) generated to increase panic
  • Average requested payment has increased from $5,000 to $12,000

Defense: establish family safe words. If you receive a distress call, hang up and call the person directly on their known number. For more, see how scammers use AI.

Trend 3: Fake Solar Panel Incentive Scams

With the expansion of federal renewable energy tax credits in 2026, scammers are impersonating solar installation companies and government programs. Door-to-door and phone scammers claim you qualify for "free solar panels" through a government program. They collect deposits ($500-2,000) for installations that never happen, or sign victims up for predatory financing agreements disguised as government programs.

Verify any solar offer by checking the installer's license with your state contractor licensing board and confirming federal incentives at energy.gov.

Trend 4: Cryptocurrency "Recovery" Scams

A cruel second layer of fraud targeting crypto scam victims. After losing money to a cryptocurrency scam, victims search online for help recovering funds. They find professional-looking "crypto recovery" firms that promise to trace and recover stolen cryptocurrency — for an upfront fee. These firms are scams themselves, taking fees ($500-5,000+) and delivering nothing.

Reality check: legitimate blockchain forensics firms (Chainalysis, CipherTrace) work with law enforcement, not individuals. They do not advertise on Google or social media. No one can "hack" stolen crypto back.

Trend 5: Fake Shopping Apps

April 2026 saw a surge in fraudulent shopping apps appearing briefly on the Google Play Store. These apps impersonate discount retailers, collect payment information for "deals," and either ship counterfeit goods or nothing at all. Nine such apps were removed from the Play Store in the first half of April after accumulating over 150,000 combined downloads. For guidance, see how to check if an app is safe.

By the Numbers: April 2026
