Online Scams in South Africa: Complete Guide 2026

The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) reported R3.2 billion in banking-related fraud losses in 2025. South Africa's digital financial landscape — including widespread mobile banking, digital wallets, and a growing e-commerce sector — faces persistent threats. The country's unique challenges, including load shedding and high unemployment, create additional exploitation opportunities for scammers.

SARS (Tax Authority) Scams

South African Revenue Service impersonation is the most common government-related scam. Fake SARS emails and SMS about tax refunds, outstanding returns, and compliance issues lead to phishing pages that capture eFiling login credentials and personal information.

"SARS Notice: You are due a tax refund of R4,287. To process your refund, verify your banking details at: [phishing link]. Reference: SARS-2026-RF-28471." — A SARS phishing message. SARS processes refunds through eFiling and never sends links requesting banking details.

Access SARS services only through sarsefiling.co.za. SARS communicates primarily through eFiling messages and registered mail.

Banking Fraud

FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank, and Capitec are impersonated in sophisticated phishing attacks. SIM swap fraud — where scammers transfer your phone number to their SIM to intercept OTPs — is a particularly severe problem in South Africa. With your OTPs redirected, scammers access your banking app and drain your accounts.

SIM swap protection: Enable app-based authentication rather than SMS OTPs where possible. Contact your mobile provider immediately if your phone loses signal unexpectedly — this could indicate a SIM swap in progress.

Load Shedding Scams

South Africa's ongoing load shedding crisis has spawned unique scams: fake solar panel installation companies that take deposits and disappear, fraudulent prepaid electricity purchasing platforms, and fake Eskom communications about billing or power restoration schedules.

Marketplace and E-commerce Fraud

Gumtree, OLX, Facebook Marketplace, and Takealot face fraud. Advance payment scams for vehicles, electronics, and property rentals are common. Fake proof-of-payment screenshots are used to deceive sellers into releasing goods before the actual transfer clears.

Employment Scams

With high unemployment, South Africans are heavily targeted by job scams. Fake government job postings, work-from-home scams requiring "registration fees," and fake recruitment agencies exploit job seekers. Government jobs are posted on dpsa.gov.za and never require application fees.
