Step-by-Step Guide

How to Spot a Charity Scam.

Charity scams spike after natural disasters, pandemics, and high-profile tragedies. Scammers exploit compassion by creating fake organizations or impersonating real ones. This guide helps you ensure your donations reach legitimate causes.

Received a donation request?

Paste it here — we'll help you determine if the charity request is legitimate.

01Verify through independent databases.

Check any charity on Charity Navigator, GuideStar, or the BBB Wise Giving Alliance before donating. These organizations evaluate charities on financial health, transparency, and how much actually goes to the stated cause.

02Watch for name similarity tricks.

Scam charities use names almost identical to real ones: "American Red Crescent" vs. "American Red Cross," "Cancer Research Fund" vs. "Cancer Research Institute." Always verify the exact name.

03Donate directly, not through links.

Go to the charity's official website by typing the URL yourself. Don't donate through links in emails, texts, or social media posts. GoFundMe and similar platforms should be verified through the organizer's identity.

04Never donate via gift cards or wire transfer.

Legitimate charities accept credit cards, checks, and established online payment platforms. They never ask for gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency donations.

Quick checklist.

[ ]The charity is listed on Charity Navigator, GuideStar, or BBB
[ ]The organization's name exactly matches a verified charity
[ ]You donated through the official website, not a link from an email or text
[ ]Donation was via credit card or check, not gift cards or wire transfer
[ ]The charity can provide documentation of tax-exempt status
