Online Scams in Turkey: Complete Guide 2026

Turkey's BTK (Information and Communication Technologies Authority) reported a sharp rise in cybercrime complaints in 2025, with phishing, banking fraud, and social media scams leading the categories. Turkey's rapid digital transformation, widespread mobile banking adoption, and the economic pressures from inflation create conditions where scammers thrive.

Banking and Finance Scams

Turkish banks — Ziraat Bankası, Garanti BBVA, İş Bankası, Yapı Kredi, Akbank, and Halkbank — are all impersonated through SMS, email, and phone calls. Messages about "hesabınız bloke edildi" (your account has been blocked) or suspicious EFT/FAST transfers direct victims to fake banking portals.

"Garanti BBVA: Hesabınızda şüpheli işlem tespit edilmiştir. Hesabınızın güvenliği için kimlik doğrulamanızı yapınız: [phishing link]" — A fake banking SMS. Turkish banks never send account verification links via text.

Turkey's FAST (Fonların Anlık ve Sürekli Transferi) instant payment system — similar to Pix in Brazil — enables rapid, irreversible transfers that scammers exploit for social engineering attacks.

e-Devlet (Government Portal) Scams

e-Devlet is Turkey's central government services portal. Fake messages about tax refunds, social security payments, and updated documents link to phishing versions of the e-Devlet login page. Access e-Devlet only at turkiye.gov.tr with your e-Devlet credentials.

PTT and Cargo Delivery Scams

PTT (Posta ve Telgraf Teşkilatı), Yurtiçi Kargo, Aras Kargo, and MNG Kargo are impersonated in delivery scam messages. The standard pattern: "Kargonuz teslim edilemedi" (your cargo could not be delivered) with a link to pay a small fee.

Social Media and Investment Scams

With Turkey's high inflation rates, investment scams promising guaranteed returns are especially effective. Fake forex trading platforms, cryptocurrency schemes, and gold investment scams target Turks looking to protect their savings from currency devaluation. Instagram and Telegram are primary promotion channels.
