Roblox Scams: Protecting Kids from Free Robux Fraud

Roblox has 80 million daily active users, and more than half are under 16 years old. The platform's virtual currency, Robux, is essentially money to these young players — they use it to buy avatar items, game passes, and accessories that carry real social status. Scammers know this and have built an entire fraud industry around exploiting children's desire for free Robux.

In 2025, the Better Business Bureau reported a 67% increase in Roblox-related scam complaints, with the average victim being 11 years old. Parents, this guide is for you.

Free Robux Generator Scams

Search YouTube for "free Robux" and you'll find thousands of videos promising unlimited Robux through generators, hacks, or glitches. These videos direct kids to external websites that look like this:

"Welcome to the Official Roblox Robux Generator! Enter your username, select the amount of Robux you want (up to 100,000), and click Generate. Complete one quick survey to verify you're human."

Here's what actually happens: the "survey" collects personal information, signs children up for premium SMS services that charge parents' phone bills, installs adware or malware, or harvests Roblox login credentials. The Robux never appear because there is no generator. It's technically impossible — Robux are tracked on Roblox's servers, not locally, and cannot be created by external tools.

Every single "free Robux generator" is a scam. No exceptions. This needs to be communicated clearly to children who play Roblox.

Phishing Games Within Roblox

Some scams exist within Roblox itself. Scammers create games with names like "FREE ROBUX OBBY" or "ADMIN COMMANDS - GET ANY ITEM FREE" that require players to enter their Roblox password into an in-game text box to "verify" their account.

Roblox will never ask for a password inside a game. The game code cannot verify passwords — any password entered into an in-game text box is simply being sent to the game developer, who can then log into and steal the account.

Trading Scams

Roblox's trading system for limited-edition items is rife with scams targeting young players:

The "trust trade": "Give me your limited item first to prove you trust me, then I'll give you mine." The scammer takes the item and leaves.

The fake value claim: A scammer convinces a child that their rare item is actually worthless and offers to "do them a favor" by trading a common item for it.

The external payment scam: "I'll pay you $20 on PayPal for that item." The child trades the item, the PayPal payment never comes (or comes from a stolen account and is reversed).

Social Engineering and Grooming

Beyond financial scams, predators use Roblox to build relationships with children. They may offer free Robux, game passes, or rare items as a way to establish trust and create a sense of obligation. This can escalate to requests for personal information, photos, or meetings.

Warning signs parents should watch for:

  • Your child mentions an older online "friend" who gives them gifts
  • They become secretive about their online activities
  • They receive Robux or items from unknown sources
  • They're communicating with Roblox contacts outside the platform (Discord, text messages)

IsThisAScam's 6-layer detection system can help parents analyze suspicious links and messages their children receive, providing clear assessments of whether content is safe or potentially harmful.

Fake Roblox Websites

Scammers create websites that impersonate Roblox, with URLs like roblox-free.com, robuxgenerator.net, or rblx-rewards.com. These sites:

  • Steal login credentials through fake login pages
  • Install malware through "Roblox mod" downloads
  • Collect personal information through fake surveys
  • Sign visitors up for paid subscriptions through deceptive forms

The only legitimate Roblox website is roblox.com. Robux can only be purchased through the official website or app.

YouTube and TikTok Robux Scams

Scammers create convincing videos showing themselves "generating" free Robux. These videos use screen recording tricks — they simply buy Robux normally, edit the video to add fake "generator" overlays, and record their balance increasing. The comments are filled with bot accounts confirming "it works!"

Children who follow the video's instructions end up on phishing sites, downloading malware, or giving away their account credentials.

Parent's Guide to Roblox Safety

Account settings:

  • Set up a parent PIN in Roblox settings to prevent your child from changing restrictions
  • Enable Account Restrictions for younger children, which limits chat and blocks access to certain games
  • Use age-appropriate chat settings (under-13 accounts have filtered chat by default)
  • Enable two-step verification on your child's account
  • Review your child's friends list periodically

Education:

  • Explain clearly that free Robux generators don't exist and are always scams
  • Teach them never to enter their password anywhere except the official Roblox login
  • Explain that real Roblox staff will never ask for their password
  • Encourage them to tell you if someone online makes them uncomfortable
  • Review their gameplay occasionally — play together if possible

Financial controls:

  • Don't store credit card information in the Roblox account
  • Use Roblox gift cards instead of linked payment methods
  • Set spending limits and review transaction history regularly
