Online Scams in the Philippines: Complete Guide 2026

The Philippines' Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) reported that Filipinos lost over ₱12 billion to online scams in 2025. The country's massive mobile-first population (over 80 million social media users), widespread use of GCash and Maya digital wallets, and heavy reliance on text messaging create a uniquely vulnerable digital landscape.

Text Scam Epidemic

The Philippines experiences one of the world's worst text scam problems. Mass-blast text messages about fake job offers, lottery wins, and reward claims reach millions of Filipinos daily. Despite the SIM Registration Act implemented in 2023, scammers continue operating through pre-registered SIMs and SMS aggregators.

"Congratulations! You have been selected to receive ₱50,000 from Globe/Smart Rewards. To claim, click: [phishing link] or reply with your GCash number and MPIN." — A mass-sent text scam. Globe and Smart never send prize notifications via text.

GCash and Maya (Digital Wallet) Fraud

GCash, used by over 80 million Filipinos, is the primary target. Scammers trick victims into sharing MPINs, OTPs, or GCash credentials through fake customer service calls, social media messages, and phishing links. The "GCash lending" scam promises instant loans through fake GCash-affiliated apps that steal personal data.

GCash will never call asking for your MPIN or OTP. Access GCash support only through the official app. Never share your MPIN with anyone.

Online Selling Fraud

Facebook Marketplace, Shopee, and Lazada Philippines face extensive seller fraud. Bogus sellers on Facebook collect payments through GCash and disappear. Fake Shopee seller pages offer products at steep discounts to lure buyers off-platform for direct payments.

Job Scams and Recruitment Fraud

Fake job postings targeting OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) applicants promise positions in the Middle East, Europe, or North America in exchange for processing fees. Some recruiters are unlicensed and charge excessive fees for jobs that don't exist. Verify recruiter licenses through POEA (Philippine Overseas Employment Administration).

Domestically, "online job" scams recruit victims for fake data entry, product review, or crypto trading tasks that require "investments" yielding no returns.

Government Impersonation

Fake SSS (Social Security System), PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG messages about contributions, claims, or benefits target Filipinos. BIR (Bureau of Internal Revenue) impersonation also occurs. Access government services only through official websites and apps.
