Online Scams in Brazil: Pix, WhatsApp, Banking Fraud

Brazil is one of the world's most targeted countries for online fraud. The Brazilian Federation of Banks (FEBRABAN) reported attempted fraud losses exceeding R$10 billion in 2025. Brazil's universal adoption of Pix (the instant payment system used by over 150 million Brazilians), heavy WhatsApp dependency, and the complexity of the Boleto payment system create a unique fraud landscape unlike anywhere else in the world.

Pix Scams

Pix, launched by Brazil's Central Bank in 2020, revolutionized payments — and fraud. Its instant, irreversible nature makes it the preferred tool for scammers. Common Pix scams include:

Fake Pix central scam: Scammers call victims claiming to be from a "Pix Central" at their bank, alleging a suspicious Pix transaction was detected. They guide victims through "canceling" the transaction — which actually initiates a new transfer to the scammer's account.

"Prezado cliente, detectamos uma transferência Pix suspeita de R$2.500 em sua conta. Para cancelar, acesse o link seguro: [phishing link] ou ligue para nossa central Pix." — A fake bank message about a suspicious Pix transfer. Banks do not have a separate "Pix central" — this is always a scam.

Pix refund (MED) scam: Scammers exploit the Pix MED (special return mechanism) by sending a small Pix to your account, then calling and claiming it was a mistake, asking you to return the money to a different account. Meanwhile, they file a MED claim to get the original Pix reversed too — double-dipping.

QR code fraud: Scammers replace legitimate QR codes at businesses or create fake payment pages with their own QR codes, redirecting payments to their accounts.

WhatsApp Cloning and Impersonation

WhatsApp is used by virtually every Brazilian for communication, including business transactions. Scammers clone or hijack WhatsApp accounts by obtaining the verification code (through social engineering or SIM swapping) and then message the victim's contacts requesting urgent Pix transfers.

A variation: scammers don't clone the account but create a new account using the victim's photo and name, then message contacts from the new number claiming they "changed their number." They then request Pix transfers for fabricated emergencies.

Enable two-step verification in WhatsApp. Never share verification codes. If a contact requests money from a new number, call them on their known number to verify.

Boleto Fraud

Boletos bancários are Brazil's unique payment slips, widely used for bills and purchases. Scammers modify boleto barcodes and payment links so that payments go to their accounts instead of the intended recipient. This affects everything from rent payments to e-commerce purchases.

Always verify the beneficiary name and CNPJ/CPF when paying a boleto. If the name doesn't match the expected recipient, don't pay.

Fake Central do Banco (Bank Central) Calls

Scammers call claiming to be from your bank's security team, complete with spoofed caller ID showing the bank's real phone number. They describe a supposed fraud on your account and guide you through "security procedures" that actually transfer your money or grant the scammer access to your account.

Banks in Brazil never call asking you to make transfers, provide passwords, or install apps. If you receive such a call, hang up and call your bank using the number on the back of your card.

Reporting Scams in Brazil

  • Delegacia de Crimes Cibernéticos: File a boletim de ocorrência (B.O.) at your local delegacia or online
  • Procon: Consumer protection — check your state's Procon website
  • Central Bank: Report Pix fraud through your bank's app or contact the BCB
